Emmigration: What It is Like to Leave Your Country

A look at what it is like when arriving in a foreign country for the first time.

Pack up and go! That is easier said than done. Family, Friends, pets and the way of life you are used to - no more; unless of course you can get your friends and family to move with you.

It is easy for someone to tell you to just pack up and go, but all the logistics behind emigration are not always evident. My advice to anyone wanting to move to another country is to carefully consider where you want to go. Visit the country at least twice before deciding to move there. Everything will be different to what you are used to; money, driving, food, language, culture just to name a few.

When you step of the aircraft and get into the hired car, that you have to give back in a week's time, you are all excited. You drive out of the airport to the hotel, which you have only booked for a week, and the first thing you notice are people driving differently.

You get to the hotel and nobody knows how to spell your name. Eventually you give up and write it down on a piece of paper. Ok so let's get our phones working. You get into the car and you don't know where to go? You ask the receptionist, but unfortunately she is a foreigner. So again you give up and buy a map. The map didn't help much cause we couldn't locate any street names, but eventually found a mall and got the phones working.

The first time you go to buy food can be a big shock. First of all when you walk into the shop the food is totally different. None of the brands you are used to. Where can I get a laundry basket? It took us three weeks to locate a laundry basket. Then when you have to pay the first time you're not used to the price because the currency is different. Did I pay too much for that? I don't know?

Then you get back into the car, take out the map and again can't find any street names. You get lost for four hours and eventually find your way.

A foreign country can be difficult, especially if you don't know anyone there. So think carefully before you just pack up and go.

Yes, people like you should certainly stay at home.

Actually my parents moved twice already without having gone there before. Once to Swaziland where they stayed for four years and now they've been been in Tasmania for more than a year and a half. The more you do it, the easier it gets. You also need to plan things. What, how, where, when it's important. ;)

hi there,
i am moving to france shortly and as only a young teen seems a bit drastic.
It would be really relieving to hear the plus sides rather than the down.
I am moving this winter and dont know what to pack.
Like you said when people say pack up and go,
what do you pack?

We left the UK and moved to Cyprus, we had never visited before but it ticked all the boxes after 18months of research, it turns out we knew more than a lot of folks and have settled here well, 4yrs down the line we are still here. Research well. What we can't find we adapt or make our own now. Go with the flow and leave your old country behind and embrace the new. Interesting read.

Annonomous, use the internet, find out what the weather is like, pack for all seasons and good luck
