Do inspectors help or hurt a first time home buyer?

Have you ever just felt like your head was spinning and you had no control what so ever? Well I just bought my first home and knew nothing about what I was getting my-self into, so naturally I hired an inspector to tell me if I was buying the right home or not. I waited to hear back from him and when I did I was so excited to find out the 97 year old house was a great investment and very sound. I have now lived in the house for six months and my husband and I decided to re-do the laundry room, kitchen, and slap on some new paint during spring break. We started off painting the spare bedroom then moved on to the laundry room and decided that both of those rooms went pretty smooth so we could move on to the kitchen. Kitchen, that's like a four letter word these days.

Pulling off the sunflower border wasn't so bad, now the paneling on the other hand was covering holes in every wall ( big holes), and nothing can top taking the ceiling tiles down from the drop ceiling all four layers of tiles that is. Have you ever seen shop lights in a kitchen? Let me tell it's not a pretty sight and neither is the electrical that is not even close to being up to code. But hey I guess an inspectors job is to tell you what you want to hear and not the harsh reality that your house has been rigged up by some Mr. fix it with too much time on his hands and you will eventually have to replace everything. Did I mention that we found out the house had a fire and a flood and nobody disclosed that information to us nor did the inspector notice any of these things?

Don't get me wrong I am not sorry I bought my first home I just wish us newbies could pay someone to come out and be brutally honest with us so we can make a truly informed decision and know what we are getting into. I almost forgot the best part we have not yet put the new ceiling tiles back up because we are still in the process of fixing the electrical and I have ants falling into my kitchen from the attic above. we found nests of them in them. If what doesn't kill us makes us stronger and what we don't know wont hurt us does this make all first time home buyers invincible?
