Three Things You Can Do to Save Time and Money: Cleaning Out Your Fridge

Spring is here and there’s no better place to start tidying than in the kitchen! Here’s a couple of ideas on how to better store your food and save on food costs.

The cost of living is going up. It just costs more to feed a family. I work hard for my money, so I don't think it's a good idea to be throwing food away. Often I ask myself if there's a better way to economize and make that dollar stretch more.

Let's start with the fridge.

I tried thinking of a better way to store fresh food which would save time on cooking meals and to let it keep longer.

Store meat in Take Away Containers

It makes the defrosting process more convenient. The container's microwaveable and if you want you can leave it out to thaw and have it ready for you when you get home from work.
Also it's a lot more hygienic to get the meat out of its packaging as soon as you bring it home from the supermarket.

Chop up That Celery

That celery's taking up way too much space. So I decided to chop it up to use in my stirfry's, soups, etc. Also to make sure it lasts longer, once its chopped up I leave them in the freezer where they'll keep for a month.

To make the leafy bits of the celery edible, just broil them in hot, boiling water. That'll do the trick. Leafy portions of vegetables don't keep as well in the fridge. They dry out too fast. So I'll normally consume these bits first.

Keep Bread at Below Room Temperature

I can't believe not many do this. But I leave my bread in the fridge when I am not eating them. They last twice as long, which means that given the same level of food consumption, you don't have to buy as much.

Keep your living costs low by only buying what you need and learn to make food last longer. Make full use of the refrigerator. And don't throw away those plastic takeaway containers, they sure do come in handy. Storage containers by Tupperware costs money, and that money can be put to better use elsewhere. I hope this ideas inspire you. Feel free to comment on my Kitchen Ideas!
