How to Save Energy: Your Refrigerator

The refrigerator is one of our major appliances. It utilizes more energy and contributes to your electrical bill. Read on to save energy.

  1. Do not place your refrigerator near to humid, dry and heat sources. But, place it in the location where does not expose to sunlight and well-ventilated.
  2. Leave some space for your refrigerator. There should be at least 10cm between both sides of the refrigerator and wall, at least 10 cm between the rear of the refrigerator and the wall and at least 30cm between the top of the refrigerator and the above surface.
  3. Do not open your refrigerator too often and for too long, as the cold will be lost. Make sure the door is closed properly.
  4. The temperature of your refrigerator should be adjusted according to foods in it. Do not simply adjust the temperature too low or too high.
  5. Do not keep foods for too long. Allow for some space by arranging the foods in a sequence. Hot foods should be kept outside the refrigerator until it cools. Otherwise, its vapor can add to compressor workload.
  6. Defrost your refrigerator regularly. A thick layer of ice forming in your freezer can cause less cooling efficiency. In this case, the compressor has to utilize more electricity to keep refrigerator cool and this may finally damage the compressor.
  7. Do not leave your refrigerator door open
  8. Make sure the magnet gasket of your refrigerator is in good condition. Get it repaired if it is damaged.
  9. Do not overload the refrigerator as this will cause the air circulation becomes less efficient. As a result, the refrigerator will eat up more electrical energy.
  10. If you are not going to be home for a long period of time, you should unplug the refrigerator in order to save the electricity. In this case, clean out the refrigerator and unplug it. Leave the door opens to air it out.
