How to Keep Your Money in Your Pocket During a Recession

Shopping for necessary items such as groceries can be trying enough during a recession, but trying to fit extras into an already tight budget can be downright frustrating. The solution: cut out the middle man and make them yourself at a fraction of the cost.

Facial Astringent

  • 3 cups water
  • 3 tbsp Dried Chamomile Flowers
  • 1 ½ tbsp Dried Mint

Boil all ingredients for 10 min. Remove from heat and steep 10 minutes more. Strain into a jar with a tight fitting lid. Keep refrigerated for up to two weeks. Apply with cotton pad.

Facial Scrub

  • ½ cup Cornmeal
  • 2 Tbsp Honey
  • 1 tbsp finely ground Walnuts or Almonds

Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Pack onto face and let sit 5 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and pat dry. ( if mixture is too dry or crumbly, add a few drops of water before applying)

Laundry Stain Pre-soak

  • 1 quart water
  • 1 ½ tbsp Liquid Laundry Detergent
  • 2 tbsp Baking Soda
  • 1/4 cup Ammonia

Combine all ingredients in a large jar and shake vigorously until mixed. Apply a small amount of mixture to stains and let stand 10 minutes before washing. * Be sure to label bottle and store where children can`t reach.

Insecticide

  • 4 Fresh Hot Peppers
  • 3- 4 Garlic Cloves
  • 1 tbsp Liquid Soap
  • 4 cups Water

Combine everything but the liquid soap in food processor. Transfer to a jar and shake ingredients to mix. Allow to sit overnight. Strain and transfer liquid to a spray bottle. * always test on a few leaves before spraying entire plant.

Liquid Hand Soap

  • 2 cups Scented Soap Shavings
  • 2 tbsp Glycerin
  • ½ gallon Water

Combine all ingredients in a large pot over low heat, stirring occasionally until soap has completely dissolved. While still warm transfer to a large container with a lid. Transfer smaller amounts into pump dispensers when needed.

Bubbles

  • 1/2 cup dish washing liquid (Dawn or Sunlight seem to work best)
  • 2 - 3 tbsp Glycerin
  • 4 cups Water

Mix all ingredients and store in an airtight container.

Playdough

  • 2 cups regular white Flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons Alum
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • Food Coloring

Mix all ingredients in a large pot and heat over medium heat until mixture is stiff to stir. Store in airtight containers.

Houseplant Fertilizer

*For use on non-flowering houseplants.

  • 1/2 tbsp Epsom Salts
  • 1/2 tbsp Baking Soda
  • 1/4 tsp Ammonia
  • 1/2 gallon Water

Combine baking soda, ammonia and Epsom salts in a bowl. Stir mixture into warm water and stir until dissolved. Use instead of regular watering once a month.

Brass and Copper Polish

  • 1/2 cup Warm water (should be almost hot)
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1 cup White Vinegar
  • 1/2 cup Powdered Laundry Detergent
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 regular white All Purpose Flour

Mix detergent, salt and flour in a large Glass bowl. Pour in remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour mixture onto brass or copper objects and rub with a cloth. Rinse and polish. Store mixture in a large glass jar with a tight lid. * Shake before each use.

Thank you all for your comments. I guess you can see how I spend my spare time...brewing up silly concoctions to try and save a buck. But..they do save money, and they do work.
