How to Decorate Your Walls with Texture

Would you like to give a boring room a whole new dimension? Try adding some texture to the walls. Here's how.

Are the walls of a particular room in your home looking flat and uninteresting? Why not jazz them up by adding some texture? Texture applied to flat walls can add a whole new decorative dimension and give a boring room fresh appeal. When you decorate your walls, stop thinking of boring paintings and flat pieces of uninspiring artwork. Decorating your walls should be an exercise in creativity. Here's how to make a room memorable by adding texture to the walls.

Use Clusters of Mirrors

Mirrors can really open up a room and make it look light and expansive. Instead of placing a mirror here and there, group mirrors together along a wall for a more dramatic effect. Your room will instantly look larger, more open, and appealing to the eye.

Cluster Your Artwork

Using the same principle as mirrors, hanging artwork in groups or clusters is visually more interesting than having an isolated piece hanging here and there. Display artwork with similar themes together on walls, using the theme to tell a design story. This will instantly add character to a flat, uninspiring room.

Create a Faux Window

If you have a room devoid of windows, why not create a faux window to add visual texture? A faux window can be created out of mirrors to open up a room or you can create a window depicting the scene of your choice. You can find instructions for making a faux window quickly and easily on the internet.

Think Three-Dimensional

Instead of displaying paintings or flat artwork, hang three dimensional objects on your walls. To add interest to a kitchen, you can hang colorful groupings of china plates or old kitchen utensils. Try hanging groups of interesting, old collectibles on the walls of any room in your home. Anything from old baskets to collectible cloth dolls can be displayed on walls to add texture and interest.

Use Shadow Boxes

Another convenient way to display collectibles on a wall is by using a shadow box. You can buy these inexpensively at yard and estate sales or at your local craft store. If you're handy with a saw and wood, you can create your own and finish them so they compliment the décor of your home. Mount your completed shadow boxes on the wall and fill them with interesting souvenirs from your travels. It's a great way to personalize and texture your wall space.

Hang Beautiful Quilts or Tapestries

If you love the look and feel of antique quilts and tapestries, why not hang them on your walls? A beautiful quilt hanging on the wall of an old-fashioned, farmhouse bedroom can add character and warmth. Plus, it's better than hiding those old quilts away in a blanket chest.

By adding texture to the walls of your home, you create a warmer, more inviting décor. Why not take a fresh look at your walls?
