Household Cleaning Tips for Families

What you need to know to help your family get organized and get clean.

Do you ever feel like you're constantly picking up after your family? Or maybe you feel like no matter how hard you clean, things are instantly a mess again. There are some ways you can help your family learn to keep the house clean by everyone doing their own share.

There is much less work for one person when everyone in the household learns to pick up after themselves and make time for small cleaning tasks. This keeps the cleaning and chores balanced and make less work for everyone and more time for doing what you want to do. But some things are easier said than done.

Here are some tips to help you and your family stay clean and with less effort:

  1. Clean as you go: Whenever you make a mess, spill something, drop something or allow messes to pile up, it takes it longer to clean and makes more work for you (or someone else) to do. When you clean as you go, things stay clean and it works great for everyone in the home.
  2. Keep bathrooms clean: Messes happen in the bathroom; it's only natural. However, if you clean them up as you go, it makes it much easier for everyone else. Be sure to always keep proper cleaning tools and supplies in the bathroom so that if a mess happens, that person can quietly (and discreetly) clean it up right away.
  3. When you use something, put it back: Things within the home have their proper place and if you always return something from where you got it when you're done with it, everything will be cleaner. This also means when someone else needs something, they know where to find it.
  4. Regularly declutter: Take time once a month, once every two months, etc to declutter your home. Get rid of all the old junk you don't need anymore, clear out old papers and mail, dust the furniture and clear out those “junk” drawers that pile up.
  5. Create a place for everything: Make sure everything in your home is organized and has a place where it belongs. Then be sure everyone in the household knows this place and knows where to put things back when they are done with them.

You can help encourage everyone in your family to follow these tips and work together to keep the house clean and keep everything in its proper place. This means less work for any one individual and your home always looking nice.
