Here at the house, our trashcan is next to the stove. My wife doesn't like trashcans under the sink so ours is more out in the open. For a long time I just put up with the smell, but after a while it really started to get to me.
I tried orange this and lemon that, but nothing really worked for very long. Then, standing in line to pay for gas, I saw one of those tree car fresheners. I thought I'd give it a try and bought a couple. I took it home, unwrapped a whole one and put it in the trashcan underneath the bag.
The next morning the whole kitchen smelled like a pine tree. A pine tree that had done something terribly wrong. So, I took that one out and experimented with different amounts and different scents. Eventually we found that, for us, bubblegum smell and about a quarter of a tree a week works very well.
Since everyone is different, you will need to experiment with scents and amounts that work for you. But, I will say that our kitchen doesn't stink anymore and I don't have to buy expensive orange this or lemon that. Just a two dollar car air freshener.
