Green Tips for Storing Food

Recycle the plastic containers that the prepared food from grocery stores comes in by storing food in them at home. This will save you money from throwing out leftovers and other foods that have gone stale before their time.

With so many people and companies trying to help people who want to go green in their daily lives and saving money in the process by going green with saving your leftovers can save everyone money on many levels. Many of us cook too much when fixing meals. Rather, than buying plastic storage dishes to put your leftovers in, reuse your plastic butter dishes, cool whip bowls, sandwich meat containers like the Ziploc plastic tubs, and other types of plastic containers that many ready to heat meals come in.

Plastic Round Containers

By reusing the butter, cottage cheese, cool whip, and other plastic containers for storing the leftovers from over cooked meals in, the family can also take them as they are for lunches at work or school. Not only can these containers be used for leftovers from meals, they can be used for family picnics and on camping trips to store food in.

These round containers can also store broth from chicken for future use of soups, stews, and other recipes that require chicken broth. The chicken broth in the plastic round containers can be put in the freezer.

Don't forget to reuse the different sizes of round plastic containers, such as sour cream, cream cheese, chip dips, and all sizes of butter containers for smaller amounts of food storage. For example, use the plastic cream cheese containers for snacks for the kids. They are the perfect size for smaller kids to grab and take their snack from.

Some of the small round taller sour cream containers, such as Daisy sour cream, can be used for premade single serve drinks for outings, such as Kool-Aid, tea or lemonade. Not only can they be used for drinks, they can be used for premeasured amounts of flour, sugar or coffee, for camping trips.

Rectangular Sandwich Meat Containers

The rectangular sandwich meat containers can be used to store dry foods in the kitchen cabinets with ease. These types of containers will be good to use when the pasta bags or boxes are getting near the end of the box. Pour the pasta into the container and clip the cooking instructions from the original container in the new one and recycle the other container.

The same idea can be used for chips, cookies, and other items that are near the end of the package they are in. This will help keep the food fresher.

You can also cut fruits and place them in these containers for single serve fruit snacks. This can also be done with vegetables if you wish to cut them ahead for a meal. This will help cut down on future prep work. Any cut vegetables can also be put in the freezer so they will last longer.

The thinner sandwich meat containers could be used to keep cheese in for longer storage. This will keep the air away from the cheese from molding or drying out faster.

Many containers those premade foods come in have lids and can be stacked in the refrigerator and freezer. These containers are also great for storing dry goods in the cabinet to keep bugs out of the food. These are just a few tips on how you can recycle these containers for food storage.
