Creating a Fresh Atmosphere in Your Home

How to get rid of burnt food smells and other unpleasant odours.

Instead of using oil burners with fragrant essences that seem to mask smells, this remedy makes a fresh and pleasant atmosphere in your home. Best of all, it uses ingredients usually found in most home pantries. So if you've just burnt the potatoes, or there are other odours permeating the house, get rid of the stench with this simple trick.

Here's how:

  1. In a saucepan filled with water (the one the food was burnt in is excellent) add 4 tablespoons each, of powdered cinnamon and clove. You can use just one of these spices, but together is even better.
  2. Set the pot on the stove and let simmer for at least an hour.
  3. Refill as it evaporates and ensure it doesn't boil dry again.

Alternatives:

  • Two or three drops of clove oil in a pot of water. More than that can be overpowering.
  • A teaspoon of vanilla oil and a tablespoon of cinnamon powder.

In future, use a timer, an alarm clock, your cellphone reminder function; anything that will remind you to check the pot. For stubborn smells, repeat over several days.
