10 Ways to Make the Most of Closet and Cabinet Space

If your closets and cabinet space is running over, help is on the way. These tips will help you get it all under control.

  1. Use over-door pantry racks, which can be hung over the back of any shelf door without any screws or hardware.
  2. Install hooks or utility racks, which can be selected according to objects to be stored, such as long handled tools, vacuum hoses, mops, brooms, ironing boards and dusters.
  3. Use multi-tiered can dispensers for canned goods, bottles, medical supplies, and other small containers that clutter up shelves.
  4. Inter-space deep shelves with shelf dividers. These come in a variety of sizes and are usually made of rubberized wire. They hold items such as, blankets, plates, canned goods and small boxes.
  5. Install compact shoe shelves, which can extend along the floor, fit vertically in narrow spaces, or hang from the clothes pole.
  6. Double your closets hanging space by adding an extra rod. Two sets of short items, like suits, jackets, or skirts, can be hung above and below.
  7. Buy closet cubes, which come in various sizes, and width and are stackable.
  8. Consider the various wardrobe organizers you can buy through catalogs. They hang on closet rods and provide specialized space for all kinds of clothes, including jackets, skirts, belts, scarves, shoes, shirts, ties, and undergarments, as well as blankets, sheets, towels, and other bulky items.
  9. Use sports racks to store athletic gear that takes up a lot of space. Check sporting good stores for racks designed to hold skis, bicycles, tennis rackets, skates, balls of all sizes, base ball mitts, and many other items.
  10. If you are really pressed for closet space move some of the bulkier contents into roll out boxes on wheels, which are wide but shallow enough to slide under your bed. Alternate summer and winter wardrobes in that fashion. Always use moth balls or cedar chips for protection.
