When Buying, Buy Small

I am a firm believer that when buying a home the best option is to purchase a small house.

I am a firm believer that when buying a home the best option is to purchase a small house. I am not one of those people who say they believe one thing yet live in a different manner. My home is less than 500 square feet in size yet it provides comfortable living space for two adults, one cat, and three dogs ( our largest dog is only inside when we are at home, otherwise she spends her time in our fenced in yard). I have various reason for believing that small homes are better choices than large ones. Some of those reasons are just basic facts and common sense first hand observations.

  • A small house requires less maintenance.
  • It takes less time to clean a small house.
  • It cost less to live in a small house because of lower power bills, lower taxes, and lower insurance rates.
  • A smaller house supports the concept of green living because building it requires less material and less disturbance to the landscape.

Some of the other reasons I have for believing the purchase of a small house is a better option involves my first hand observation of difficult process of downsizing. I've watched people living in large homes engage in the downsizing process in order to move to smaller homes or to senior citizen apartments. It amazes me that people can accumulate such a large amount of “stuff”. By purchasing a small home, one learns the art of simple living quickly. A small home doesn't allow room for clutter or for the purchase of unnecessary items.

Buying a small home gives the home owner freedoms that those living in large homes may not have.

  • A small home gives you freedom from the stress that comes from trying to live in a house that is larger than you can comfortably afford.
  • A small house provides you with more free time for outdoor activities, hobbies, exercise, socializing, and general relaxation.

When considering the purchase of a house, I strongly urge you to search for a small house. Explore the option of buying a house that is smaller than what you think you need and enjoy the privilege of learning to live abundantly simple. Congratulate yourself on helping the environment as well as your budget when you purchase a small home.
