Vacuuming Your Pool

Information and advice about vacuuming a swimming pool.

You'll need a vac hose, preferably one long enough to reach the entire pool, a vac head that the hose attaches to, and a pool pole. Get the 8 foot telescoping pole. The six footer isn't long enough for most pools. Start out with the vac head attached to the hose. One end of the vac hose coupling swivels. This is the end that you attach to the vac head. Push the hose firmly onto the vac head, you don't want it to come off while you're cleaning the pool. Next attach the pool pole to the yoke of the vac head. Just squeeze the little buttons on either side of the yoke and let them pop out in the holes of the pool pole. Now put the vac head and pole in the pool and let it sink to the bottom. Do this near the skimmer. Take hold of the hose that's coming up from the vac head and start pushing the floating part of the hose under water. Keep doing this until you get to the other end of the hose.

When you have gotten all the air out of the hose feed the end of the hose through the skimmer opening. Remove the skimmer basket and push the hose down into one of the openings at the bottom of the skimmer. If there is only one opening, push the hose into it. The suction should pull the hose out of your hand. If there are two openings in the bottom of the skimmer, push the hose into the one that has suction. The pump must be on to vacuum the pool. Now you're ready to vacuum your pool. Adjust the pool pole to the length desired and move the vac head slowly back and forth across the bottom of the pool. I recommend brushing the steps before you vacuum. Steps are kind of hard to vacuum and you don't want to lift the vac head out of the pool when you vac the top step.

If your pool has a spa attached to it, you can use the vacuum to clean it. Just stand next to the spa with the pool pole and lift the vac head quickly and place it in the spa. Stay away from the marble edge of the waterfall. It will break if you hit it with the vac head. Wait a minute or so for the pump to re prime itself and then vacuum the spa. I recommend switching the valves to spa mode and then brushing any dirt that is in the spa to the drains.
