The Sock Gremlin

Account of the infamous sock gremlin.

Everyone has sock gremlins in their house. You know what I'm talking about. The critters that take your socks from the laundry bag and when you do the laundry, dry your clothes and are ready to put things away, you only find one sock. The sock gremlins took the other sock.

You may be saying “this person is crazy” but let me tell you a story. When kids lived in our house, my husband would constantly complain about missing socks all the time and always blamed it on the kids taking his socks. We were always buying socks to replace the missing ones. This would definitely be understandable if we did our laundry in a Laundromat because we could drop a sock or leave a sock in the dryer or washer. Our family did their laundry at home. Often times each person did their own laundry and sill socks when missing.

When the kids left the house, my husband was confident the missing sock issue would be resolved. Unfortunately after 3 months, again my husband came out of the bedroom yelling at the top of his lungs that his socks were missing. This time it wasn't one sock but complete pairs of socks. He informed me he only had 7 pairs of socks left and needed to purchase more socks. Now he blamed me and said I was probably giving them away to my son and his friends on their visits. What was fascinating was that my husband did the laundry.

One evening on the way to pick up my daughter at the bus terminal, I decided to finally resolve the sock issue. When my daughter was in the car, I explained what was going on and we went to the nearest department store. I purchased 36 black socks and 36 white tube socks and a large lock box with a key that fit all the socks. In the car, my daughter arranged the socks in the lock box and when we arrived at home, we put the lock box with the key on top on my husband's side of the bed.

My husband never mentioned the socks, nor the lock box. After six months, I asked him if he still had missing sock issues he replied “No, Ever since you got me the lock box, I've had no more incidents. I told you it was either you or the kids taking my socks.” He still believed either the kids or I had something to do with the socks. What he didn't know was the reason I was asking was because now my socks were missing.
