How to Decorate a Small Bedroom Colonial Style

Do you have a small bedroom that needs a new look? If you enjoy traditional design, why not decorate it in the colonial design style?

Do you need ideas on how to decorate a small bedroom? If you enjoy more traditional styles of home décor, decorating a small bedroom in the colonial design style can give it warmth and character. There's something cozy and quite comforting about sleeping in a room that echoes the design styles of our primitive ancestors. Here are some ideas for decorating a small bedroom in colonial design style:

Ideas for Walls

You have a variety of options for adding colonial character to the walls of a small bedroom. Since your bedroom is limited in size, you'll want to open it up and make it appear more spacious, if possible. For this reason, it's best to keep the walls light in color since dark colors tend to contract the size of a room and make it appear smaller. One option is to keep the walls white or natural in color and stencil primitive, colonial style designs along the wall borders. This will add character and still keep the room light and open. Another option is to choose a country or primitive style of wallpaper or colonial style of wallpaper border. Consider adding primitive prints or colonial style samplers in frames to the walls. Otherwise, keep the wall décor simple to avoid clutter since you're limited on space.

Ideas for Floors

If you have dark wooden floors in your bedroom, these will create the perfect atmosphere for a colonial bedroom.Consider placing a few braided rugs on the floor to add color and help to keep bare feet warm. These rugs give a nostalgic, homey style feel to a bedroom and are usually easy to find at a good price.

Window Coverings

Colonial window coverings were generally pretty simple and were often handmade out of inexpensive materials such as calico or gingham. Consider adding simple panel curtains in a light color to the windows of your colonial bedroom. This will keep the room light and open and not detract from the detailing on the walls.

Furniture

Furniture in colonial homes was generally quite sparse. This works in your favor if you have limited space. A simple wooden bed with four posters covered with an antique quilt and soft, fluffy pillow shams will give a snug, cozy feel to your bedroom. Add an antique blanket chest at the foot of the bed and a wooden stand with an old pitcher by the side of the bed and you have a classic colonial look. A few well placed candles in brass candle holders and a few wrought iron lanterns or lamps will complete the colonial style design.

Don't limit yourself to shopping at expensive antique stores for items to decorate a colonial bedroom. You can find accessories such as brass candle holders and old lamps at estate sales and other off price outlets. Enjoy your new room!
