A few simple tips on turning your house into an environmentally friendly home, including becoming energy and water efficient, reducing green house gas emissions, and reducing your carbon footprint. |
Reduce Energy Use- Replace all lights with energy efficient light bulbs
- Turn off all non-essential appliances (TV, stereo etc.), not just leave them on stand-by
- Turn off lights you don’t need
- Dry your clothes on a clothes line
- Use candles is you can
- Wash clothes on a cold cycle
Reduce Water Use- Install water efficient shower heads and taps. You can get some that use less water while still giving you the same water pressure
- Wash your dishes in the sink by hand and use the left over water to water the garden
- Only wash clothes when you have a full load
- Catch excess shower water (e.g. when you first turn it on and are waiting for it to heat up) and water your gardens with this instead of the hose
- Install full and half flush toilets
Reduce Gas Emissions & Carbon Footprint- Use public transport to get to work
- Walk or cycle to public transport stations
- If you have to drive to work, car-pool
- Use recyclable materials
- Buy local, organic foods
- Grow your own vegetables
- Use food scraps to create a compost to fertilise your vegetables
