Despite the turning leaves, you can still have a green fall. This is the time to be more eco conscious and to teach your kids to be as well. Not only will you save on your heating bills you'll be doing the planet a favor too.
Old leaves equal new mulch.
Instead of burning that unwanted pile, add it to your compost heap, You'll be doing the atmosphere a favor too by not clogging it up with smoke. You'll also not be causing family and friends' eyes to water also. Consider adding grass clippings and any summer vegetable plants that you've ripped out as well. A real bonus is tossing in apple cores. This makes for a rich, varied mix of compost. Get a green assessment of your home.
Some remodeling companies will do this for free. A rep will come over and see if there are any drafty windows or if there are any holes. Also your insulation may be checked. If you need any renovations then the assessment will also include that. Switch to greener appliances.
Usually most homeowners get something new come fall. If that's the case then look for fridges, washers and dryers that are good for the environment and good for your electricity bill. Bundle up! Keep your thermostat on sixty five degrees Farenheit.
Wear layers to keep you warm and cozy. Also have fleece blankets in the den or living room to curl up under when you're watching TV or a movie. Get out the down comforters now as well. Use your fireplace to also cut down on heating costs. Shut off the TV and computer for a while.
Fall is meant to be enjoyed outdoors. Don't stay inside when the scenery is breathtaking and the air is pleasantly nippy. Go on a picnic. Visit the beach. Go pumpkin picking or take a long walk in your neighborhood. Besides, the exercise will do you good. Have a green Halloween.
Make costumes from old clothing, plastics or boxes. Go creative with stuff that would normally hit the recycling bin. Also think about giving out apples or pears instead of candy (which makes litter) .
This is the perfect season to go green! You do yourself your family and Mother Nature a big boon if you become more eco friendly this autumn!
I would love to be your friend!
