Now that Winter is just around the corner, it'll be nice to be able to cut down the cost of supplying energy to your home. Here are ten ways that might help.
- When you've finished using the oven, leave its door open. The metal interior stays hot for quite a while, might as well use it to keep the kitchen warm.
- Try to keep interior doors closed as much as possible to hold in the heat
- Make sure that the radiators aren't be covered by furniture etc
- Put tin foil behind the radiators to reflect heat back into the room
- Cling film secured with tape across windows makes affordable secondary double glazing
- Ensure there's plenty of insulation in the loft and around your immersion heater
- Switch off things that aren't being used. The little red light on the TV when it's in "standby" mode uses electricity. That goes for the back light on the video as well.
- If you can afford them use energy saving light-bulbs. If not, at least use lower wattage bulbs where possible.
- The exterior door is sometimes the biggest culprit. Try to make sure it is sufficiently draft proofed.
- With electric ovens, switch off the hot plates two minutes before you take pans off the heat. The plates will hold enough heat to keep them boiling and use pan lids.
