Noisy Water Pipes

An air pocket built into the waterline will stop it from hammering.

Noisy water pipes can be annoying, and if and you become very annoyed by noisy water pipes annoying you in the night, never mind Jonsig, quit while you're ahead before you become annoying.

Older houses with steel water pipes, also many of the newer homes done in copper, very often do this, especially if the water pressure is high. This happens when the large volume of water from the street supply moving along is shut off at quickly, instead of slowly to let the movement of water stop gently; like the difference between running your car into a brick wall or a haystack.

Place a tee in the water line; perhaps under the sink, close to the floor; attach a short length of pipe, at least a foot long so it faces up. You might need an elbow. Cap it tightly so it remains full of air, this will cure the problem. When the water rushing along the pipe is stopped suddenly, a bit of water rushes up into that stub, compresses the air, which then pushes the water back. This simple setup takes the strain of the whole system. The electric valves in your dishwasher and washing machine like it.
