Light and Art for Interior Decoration

The times are changing. Certainly as far as interiors go! And though they compromise a gamut of elements, art has always been an intrinsic part of interior decor.

However, the use of art and various art forms has seen innumerable changes. The initial craze for sceneries and landscape paintings has now taken a backseat. Abstract art, figurative works and an amalgamation of the two is what is in demand these days. Individuals want art forms to which they can relate and this is especially true of paintings. Art seems to be the biggest thing to have happened to lifestyles of people, especially when they have become more aware. Money, lifestyles, and exposure to different and varied cultures have changed the way in which we view decor today. Even the options available have increased with paintings becoming a symbol of status. “The more expensive, the better”, people feels today. Hand painting is welcome, but in a manner that develops tone and texture. Walls are also being decorated with murals. The bolder the better, but only if the room is big enough to handle the drama.

Lightening too has moved away from its conventional use and can be adjusted accordingly. Soft, subtle and diffused lighting is in. A new feature is the use of motion sensors instead of manual light switches, along with an attempt to focus on subtle glow rather than direct light. Every home has a unique light level that is dependent upon many things- the way the rooms and windows face, the size and type of windows, the color of the decoration and the density of furniture in the rooms. Natural light plays an important part in the electric mix, since it can create an infinite array of atmospheres and moods in any room through the course of the day, from bright and invigorating to subdued and tranquil. Gone are the days of a single, central florescent light source for the kitchen. Colorful kitchen pendant lighting for islands and peninsulas, counter illumination, and recessed down lights above the sink and stove are all popular additions. Lighting can now change according to your moods.

Bedroom illumination remains classic, with night table lamps being the predominant source of light. But the lamps themselves have changed from subdued to elegant with plenty of sparkling crystal, and elaborate shades that are fringed, beaded, and alive with color. The current trend in lighting is more sophisticated, yet serves a dual purpose. Chandeliers have made their presence felt again and a central decorative light fixture is back with a bang
