Fixing a Plastic-Covered Wooden Table

Many people may see a deep gouge in their newly purchased plastic-covered wooden table. They think it can't be fixed, but it can, if you follow the instructions to the letter.

You just went out and bought a beautiful wooden table. You've only had it home for a few weeks, and someone put something hot on it like a knife for example, and now there seems to be a groove in it that wasn't there when you bought it. What can you do? You can't take the table back, its been weeks since you had it, and it's so beautiful with that golden shine that drew you to it in the first place, whatever will become of that groove that now highlights your new table?

Good news for you. It can be fixed, but you have to be very careful. If you follow these simple instructions you can fix that groove or any unsightly scratches very easily.

  1. Don't even consider sanding your table, you will ruin it for good
  2. Do remove everything from it, including any waxes that you may have put on the table, or anything else to make it shine
  3. Get yourself a Steam Iron, one that your wife would use to iron clothes
  4. Fill the Steam Iron with water and let it heat up, to the hottest adjustment possible
  5. When your Iron is hot, spray little bursts of steam on the table. What you are doing in pre heating the plastic that covers the wood. Do not put the Iron near the plastic, yet.
  6. As you spray the heated steam, wipe it away with a soft cloth, and touch it now and then to see how hot is
  7. If the table is warm to very warm stop using the steam. Hold your Iron about 6 inches from the table. Try not to move you hand, as the results you are looking for are about to happen.
  8. The plastic will turn to liquid, keep the iron about 6 inches from the liquid but let it flow back to it's orginal place, where the groove is
  9. When you see that the plastic has now turned to liquid let it flow by keeping the Iron close to the plastic on your table
  10. As the plastic flows it will cover up the groove. Remove the Iron from anywhere near the table. Place a rotating fan about 8 ft. from the table, and turn it on to slow rotate. Let the plastic harden and your groove should be gone. If not, don't do this a second time, as the plastic will find a new place to go, and your table will look worse.
  11. After about an hour, go over your table with a soft cloth wrapped around an ice cube, making the plastic hard again
  12. Try very hard not to scratch it again, this procedure can only be done once

Good luck.
