Six Tools You Could Live Without, Unless You Own a House

First-time home buyers, before you make that first trip to your home improvement store, know the six essential tools to purchase first so you can make your house a home.

As a first-time homebuyer, you have a lot on your mind, like finding the best mortgage, the right Realtor, and the perfect house. At some point in time, between securing the loan commitment letter and signing the closing papers, you will be imagining yourself in one or two of the houses you will visit. Imagine this-moving in and wanting to change the locks on the door right away. Before you move in, consider six essential tools to keep you from shelling out money to the local fix it guy. After all, you will need all the money you can muster to make your first mortgage payment.

Screwdriver

Take a trip to your local home improvement store. There is a vast variety, but the screwdriver with the removable bits is nifty. From changing the lock to replacing mini blinds, you will have plenty of options with just one tool. Better still, the correct screws come within the package for locks and mini blinds. If you have another project, be sure to ask for help in selecting the right screw.

Drill

Consider the drill with the capacity to drill half-inch holes only if you are ambitious enough to install track lighting or something along those lines. Otherwise, a standard-issue drill will do wonders when used with any variety of drill bits (usually purchased separately). With your new drill, you can drill holes to install anything from shelves to shower curtain rods.

Hammer

This is a necessary dual-function tool which can drive a nail for hanging pictures in your new home or pry out old moulding. Remember to ask for help with selecting the correct nail length for your project.

Level

They come big and small, lightweight and heavyweight. Take your pick. Relying on your expert eyes when marking the painting lines for your soon-to-be-striped walls is a good idea-never. Keep your friends from talking about you and purchase a level.

Wrench

A wrench is a tool you never think you need, until you need it for the first time. Trust me-this tool is handy for fixing toilet tanks and toilet seat covers.

Goggles

Safety first, even though this item is listed last for emphasis. You may not immediately think of a pair of goggles as a tool, but consider protecting your eyes from debris that will invariably be airborne as you fix the toilet or drill through drywall or pry wood. Similarly, gloves and mask of varying strengths and materials may be appropriate for your project.

Congratulations on the decision to purchase a house. Whichever one you choose, make it your home by making improvements as you see fit-with your six essential tools.
