10 Ways to Make Your House More Energy Efficient

Here are 10 ways to make your house more energy efficient and save money on your fuel bill this winter season, and save on your air conditioning next summer.

With these energy saving recommendations you can save 15% to 25% off your monthly utility bill. That can add up to quiet a tidy sum over the year.

  1. Insulate your attic and the access door. The door is often over looked and is an obvious energy loss. Insulate and weather strip the door; also Insulate your basement walls.
  2. Floor insulation in the attic may be adequate but gaps may exist between construction materials underneath, Fill in with expanding foam.
  3. Put foam insulators behind face plates of light switches and electrical outlets.
  4. Large leaks in the duct work above the furnace waste energy, sealing with expanding foam, duct tape, or calk make the joints air tight.
  5. Replace disposable furnace filter or clean washable filter every month.
  6. Use expanding foam to plug the gaps between the sill plate and the foundation.
  7. Installing a glass door on your fireplace and keeping it closed prevents room air from going up the chimney.
  8. Calking between the floor duct and sub floor reduces air leakage.
  9. Insulate the water heater.
  10. Add a circulating pump in the bath room and save hot water.
