Work, Rest, and Play

Balancing work at home jobs with leisure time can be tricky. Here are some suggestions.

Many of us are under the impression that since we work at home it has to be a 12 to 18 hour day. After all we are at our workstations a good part of the day. A business needs to be all work and no play to be successful, right? Heaven forbid we take a break.

In reality most people can concentrate and do sufficient mental work in 45-minute intervals. As human beings we need to respect our bodies enough to give it a short breakstretchblood-circulating walk, whatever floats your boat and helps you revive your weary bones.

All work and no play make us dull folk. You might just come across a joke or an anecdote that puts what you are doing into a perspective and helps you to lighten up just a bit. Your home business will benefit from you taking the time to take some time. How about entering a chat room you've never been in before. Or perhaps downloading that shareware you were wondering about. You might want to go to that “shock-value” site that your friend had mentioned to you. Perhaps you might just want to do some healthy research on a topic that has always intrigued you.

Some may view these ideas as distractions. Others would argue that they are healthy ones and to some of us who have become chained to our computers, much needed distractions.

Try playing some motivational music. You never know how of a much difference that music will make when you are about to do a task that is otherwise dull or mundane. This is not to say that you blast music and dance about the room forgetting about the work tasks that lies ahead. What we are searching for is a healthy balance in our work and our leisure.

Try using your clock and giving yourself a scheduled break time. A time to just surf the net, cook some healthy food, or play with the kids. You will see what a difference that taking off that serious work face (if only for a little while) will make. No one's going to smite you for stopping in your tracks and simply shutting things down for short periods. Wasn't the idea of being you own boss partially because you didn't want to have to answer to anyone but yourself in the first place? Didn't you crave the freedom that self-employment has to offer? So why become a slave to the work habits you may have developed. Free yourself and give yourself those well-deserved breaks that you wouldn't get as a rule if you were stuck on an assembly line in a sweatshop.

Just remember to keep the balance healthy and do what needs to be done. I am in no way shape or form condoning a lazy attitude when it comes to work at home employment, just a realistic, flowing and mind-freeing one. We have all worked for slave drivers at some point. Try not to become your own.
