There is great freedom and flexibility when working from home, but there are several problems that many people tend to overlook.
Working from home is great, especially for parents or for those who, for whatever reason would rather not deal with the nine-to-five life. Despite the fact there is great freedom and flexibility when working from home, there are several problems with working from home that many people tend to overlook. When I tell people I work from home, they think I must not deal with problems like stress, but this is far from the truth.
The fact is, working from home comes with a host of problems, many of which stem from the fact that there is little structure and perhaps too much freedom sometimes. The following are the three greatest problems I've encountered when working from home.
Time Management: With so much freedom comes the great temptation to just sit around and take breaks that are far too long. When you work from home, if you don't have any willpower and can't stick with a schedule, this can be one of your biggest problems. Even when we carefully plan out our days, there are unscheduled interruptions, such as the phone ringing or personal emails that we have the ability to answer whenever we please. When working from home, avoid the problem of time management by being a complete stickler to your schedule. Otherwise, you will not get much done aside from things to pass the time.
Bad Habits: When you work from home, you have far too many chances to engage in bad habits such as eating out of boredom or because of stress, smoking, taking breaks that are unproductive, and other problems. Working from home grants a lot of freedom to take breaks to snack or smoke and for those without willpower, working from home can even create health problems.
Lack of a Social Life: Whether or not most people want to admit it, they get a lot of their social life from being around people they work with. When you work from home, one of the biggest unseen problems is how this has an effect on your social life. Without working with people on a daily basis, or even doing other things people who go to work do, like stopping at the store or grabbing a quick lunch, you risk becoming isolated. This can happen rather quickly, especially if you like the work you do from home and have plenty of groceries and things to keep you inside. To counter this problem with working from home, make sure you get out once a day and interact with the friends you already have. Do not ever just sit in the house working all day. It's not healthy.
Most of these problems with working from home can be solved by simply having a little willpower. If you force yourself to build time management skills and stick to a schedule or if you can control what you do when you take breaks you have mastered the art of working from home.
Make sure that you get plenty of interaction with friends and family and do not become isolated. Working from is great but it's not a perfect solution. Watch out for some of these problems with working from home and you'll manage just fine!
