People have flown in from England, the Netherlands, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Florida, Wisconsin and South Dakota to stay a few blocks from the beach in California at my vacation rental.
Instead of renting the property unfurnished to long term tenants it is available usually for a minimum of one month, but someone has stayed for as long as a year.
A vacation rental differs from the unfurnished rental because the vacation rental provides everything from the linens and silverware to the cable TV and cookware. Visitors to the area can simply arrive and make themselves at home.
A vacation rental agency has a website and manages the property, which includes maintenance. If the dishwasher needs to be repaired or the television is having problems the management sends a repair person.
Amenities that can make the vacation unit enjoyable for the visitor include a patio, barbecue, stereo, VCR, DVD, cable TV, washer and dryer, and perhaps a pet friendly environment. People who drive in from outside of the area may have a small dog or a cat and it can be difficult to find a place to stay with a pet.
Attractive decorating and of course cleanliness is very important. When someone moves out it is a good idea to shampoo the carpet, wash the walls, and generally provide an in depth cleaning.
It has been seven years since I began having a vacation rental and it was a good decision. By searching for vacation rentals on the internet you can obtain additional ideas for your own. Good luck!
