First of all, as your own boss no one is breathing down your neck. Being self employed you are likely to be far more demanding on yourself than anyone else can be, but the rewards are all yours. Secondly you can fix your own hours: you can work it in around other life necessities and if you want to, you can put in a few hours any time you like, for example, I like to work late at night, something I couldn't do if I was working in an office.
Choose Your Passion
In the first place, choose something you have a real interest in. If you pick something that doesn't ring your bells, you are likely to get bored and disheartened.Be Disciplined

... which is dedicated as a working area even if it is only a table and a shelf. There is nothing worse than having to clear away to prepare dinner say, and then have to bring it all out again. Personally I have one wardrobe and a desk in the corner of one room, it is not elaborate but it works. I can block it off to look tidy with a bamboo screen. Get Organized
Sort your things into storage boxes. Even with a limited budget you can sort things, perhaps by using cardboard boxes from your groceries. I use archive boxes that were being thrown our by our local library. Get Computer Organized
Set up folders. Make sure you have at least one dedicated email for your work. Back up frequently. You can do this with removable storage discs or send some to yourself to a back-up email. Get Support
Working at home can be very isolating, so ensure you have support both for work and for social interaction. - Stay healthy.
Being your own boss and working from home is not for the faint-hearted and it may not suit your personality. You need to be very self reliant, be self motivated and have self discipline. You will find yourself working long hours, maybe even more than you would going out to work. However, it is well worth it when you are reaping the rewards.
