Earliest fountains were either meant for just washing as in Mosques Islamists wash at the fountains before prayers or for drinking water. These fountains depend on the natural flow of water due to gravitational force. Later Hellenistic hydraulic engineers applied many original ideas to create water fountains which can animate water organs and other automate. The Mughal gardens of India and Mannerist gardens of Italy were the earliest fountain displays as part of garden features in 1600s.
