The Garden Shed

Are you tired of spending five hours searching for that garden spade? Then get shedded, on how to put that garden shed back into shape.

Deep in the heart of your garden lies something which fills you with unease, brimming with all manner of things long forgotten. Deep in the heart of your garden is a blind spot where your eye passes directly from those pretty daffodils straight to that sturdy oak tree. Deep in the heart of your garden … .is your garden shed.

But do not fear : you are not alone. All across the country lie hundreds if not thousands of garden sheds laden with rusty treasures all stocked up behind a door that everyone is too afraid to open. Year after year after year seem to pass by, and with each changing numeric the same New Year resolution to somehow revolutinise the mini-interior haven that the garden shed was meant to be, falls to the floor like a crushed leaf. Has it been like this since time in memoriam? Who knows. But one thing is clear, it is time for all sheds to be free of unwanted debris and become what they were made to be, a home for all tools.

Whilst garden sheds have existed within the UK for quite a while, the main structure of this utility is thought to have originated during the 17 th century. The labyrinth of a garden within a garden where one could hide the tools, along with all other required yet visually unsavoury necessities, was understandably appealing to the aristocracy of that time, many years later, the promise of functionality that the garden shed represents continues to tempt us. According to one survey almost every household has one, and although clearing up your shed seems like a daunting task, the end results promise to be satisfying.

If the structure is already present in your garden and is overflowing with things you just do not use anymore, then the first step would be to eliminate the clutter.

Removing everything from the shed and organising into piles is just one of the many ways this can be achieved. When sorting through the items in your shed, ask yourself questions like, do I really need this? This will help you to sort through what you can use and what is going to collect dust. Have a rough outline of what you want the inside to look like and stick to it, your individual requirements for the shed will lead you categorisation. Organise your shed so that you can see things as soon as you enter. Investing in a few shelves and containers might be something to consider.

Installing hook and pegs in your garden shed allows you flexibility over time with ever-changing storage requirements. Labelling containers and boxes in your shed will stop the " ten hour search for the shovel " being an everyday occurrence and grouping similar things together such as garden tools, or plant essentials will ensure you have easy access to them at all times.

With your shed having been successfully de-cluttered, perhaps the aesthetics of your garden hut could change to take account of the whole view of your garden. Placing plants and shrubs which help the shed to blend in will not make the structure such an eye-sore. Climbing plants such as the " Clemantis Montana " or the " Brant Vine " if properly maintained, can provide a beautiful cover of your shed.

If you do not think your newly organised, and altogether spanking new shed layout will last more than a few days, do not worry. Having high expectations of your shed remaining totally clutter-free is not going to work wonders. You have to think positive. Your shed is your own space, and keeping it in order need not take more than a few hours work every month. Do more than just make it one of this years resolution J . Enlist the help of family and friends to make it an activity rather than a chore. And set the limitless possibilities of your garden shed free. And use your own creativity, decorate the inside the way you like it to reflect also on the décor of your home. Think also about your specific requirements and work you organisation around these.

Enjoy! The more time you spend enjoying your shed, the higher chance you will have of keeping it in shape all year round.
