The Family Garden

A short piece from reflecting on childhood where the peace of her family's garden gave a young woman strength. It is a postcard piece as the gardener describes her daughters appreciation of hard work on a project you love. A haven for horticultural expression!

The hard work momma put in to keep the place magnificent like all the other mansions on the street, is a tribute in this family garden. The statues, the flowerbeds and the brick against seasonal skies was a work of art. The landscape reflects a mood escaped into after the shackles of society render the gardener free…

Two dogs play on the lawn while two young woman, daughters of the gardener and creator of beautiful existences, absorb rays of the suns sweet light. Each daughter determined to be the best she can be, either a grad school professional or blue collar waitress, laughs as the family unwinds here and filters out the rage, dishonor and most of all incapacity to address the comfort issue on any other level, but natural.

Gardening was the matriarchs passion and she put a lot of hard work into the magnificent landscape where five flowerbeds reflected radiant colors, shades and varieties of flowers, one vegetable garden in which an entire menu of different veggies daily could be prepared, two decorated stone wells, and rows of neatly trimmed hedges resembling order and structure. The hedges did not resemble animals or figures of any sort, just plots of symmetrical shapes in a consistent line.

In the winter this yard is covered by a deep white blanket while in the spring it becomes a pageant of various colors and types of flora. The fall offers a postcard semblance with leaves falling and harvest gathering and a nip is in the air. The summer brings a much-appreciated heat for one of the young women, she is a freeze-baby and temperatures under 65 rattle her bones. The sunshine is very intense, all over most of the yard and ripening the tomatoes clinging to the vines.

The family's garden is a special place for most of us to escape into and creating it is as enjoyable as being in it as much as you can. The house is sold now and the garden will be missed but the memories will linger on and on and on… till next time.

Great post. I hadn't heard of the term "freeze-baby" before. The term applies to my mother; she can not handle any temperature under 70. My garden is a place of peace.

The term 'freeze-baby' was pegged onto me after a trip to Orlando Florida at DisneyWorld where I refused to take off my sweater even when the sun seemed hot enough to sunburn ! I was only 13 ad just growing into myself . . .

Thank you for your comment and have a great day !

i am thinking you probably suffered a great deal at 13, wearing a sweater in the sun and all, what is meant by growing into oneself -0- -0-

you asked if i pay attention

Well you know, puberty . . . I was not really suffering just stubborn and not resistant to wind. Growing into myself, to me, menas becoming comfortable with your own body and for awhile there it was quite awkward !

Thank you for paying attention . . . now lets see if anybody else is ?
