The Royal Horticultural Society in London initially held the Great Spring Show in the Royal Horticultural Society?s gardens in Kensington in 1852. This was later moved to Chelsea and renamed as Chelsea Flower Show in 1913. The Royal International Horticultural Exhibition was held in the Royal Hospital. After that the Chelsea Flow Show started taking place year after year in the month of May.
Initially it was a four day event but now it was changed to five day event. Now the first two days of the event are open only for the Royal Hospital Society?s members. On an average, 150,000 visitors come every year to this great garden show. The show is not only covered by the BBC but also released as a DVD version by Twofour. As part of Royal Patronage, many Royal Families of London attend the preview of the show. The land size has been tremendously increased over the years.
Different exhibits of flowers, fruits, vegetables and educational or floral arrangements receive different grades of awards at this show. The new plants are introduced and older plants are revived under the show. It is like a fashion show with the exception that the models are replaced by garden designs. The different awards include best show garden awards, best courtyard garden award, best chic garden award, best city garden award and many more. The four different grades of awards are bronze, silver, silver-gilt and gold. The garden need not be present in the show as the pictures and photographs are also exhibited as part of the show.
