The most successful indoor plants are those from tropical rainforests where they can grow in the shade of tall trees. However there is no such a thing as an “indoor plant” As all plants are evolved to grow outside but they can be adapted to grow inside.
They will need a warm sunny well-lit position but no direct sunlight, a room temperature of about 21`C. It is also important to use a premium potting mix and do not use soil from your garden as it will cake and set hard and could introduce weeds and fungal diseases. Two of the commonest reasons for plants dying is incorrect lighting and watering. All indoor plants need a rest and to be placed outdoors occasionally in a shaded sheltered spot. Two weeks outdoors and two weeks indoors is a good rotational system. Plants dislike being in cold dark closed rooms so open the curtains and put your plants near a well lit window and water daily in hot weather and weekly in colder months or purchase a self-watering planter system. If your indoor space is extremely limited or your just bored with container plants why not try a terrarium it is also called “bottle gardening”, any clean glass container can be used. It is also advisable to luke-warm water to water your plant with if temperatures get extremely cold. Drooping of your plant is a sign of stress, which means it, is either too dry or wet or too cold and dark. Heaters in winter also cause a drying effect so move plants away from heaters and fires and if rooms are kept constantly heated place the pot plants on shallow trays filled with water and pebbles with the pots just resting on the pebbles above the water. Cut back on monthly fertilizing as roots that are in cold damp soil become inactive and build up salts because the plant is dormant and is unable to use them. Dust your plant regularly by using a small paintbrush or shave-brush and try to place them out-side if gentle rain is falling.
The easiest plants to grow indoors are the ones with glossy leaves and are usually very hardy. These are; prayer plant (maranta), philodendron, rubber tree (ficus elastica), mother-in-laws tongue (sanseveria), flamingo flower (anthurium).
