I have written a number of articles recently on proper lawn care and just briefly touched on proper watering techniques. In this article I wanted to go more in depth on good watering techniques for your lawn.
If you are like me you love the look of a nice green, lush, healthy lawn. There is nothing like looking at the lawn and being the envy of the neighborhood.
One thing I have learned is proper watering techniques which make the lawn, specifically its roots, better and stronger.
Do
Water your lawn first thing in the morning as the sun rises. This ensures properly absorption without the sun drying it out too quickly.
Do Not
Water your lawn in the evening. Doing so will cause mold and fungus to grown on it. That is very unhealthy for your lawn.
Do
Water it one time per week giving it a nice drenching, soaking watering. This allows the lawn's roots to dig deep for the water. An inch of water will do.
Do Not
Water your lawn everyday. Doing so keeps the lawn's roots near the top of the surface and exposes them to the dangers of sun and excessive heat as well the cold when winter time rolls around.
Do
Water your lawn with a misting setting. If you can not do that and use a sprinkler keep an eye on the water and watch for run off. If you see water running off it means it is not absorbing into the ground. Shut the water off and wait, then begin watering again.
Do Not
Put the sprinkler on and walk away. You need to monitor the water to ensure the ground is absorbing it properly. Water that runs off never gets into the soil therefore serving no purpose for your lawn.
So there they are my Do's and Don'ts of the lawn watering process. I have learned a lot of this through research, and of course my own trial and error.
