Mulch: There's More to It Than Good Looks

Are you wondering why your garden is not up to par to that of your neighbor's? Learn why mulch could be the missing ingredient.

Envious of all the beautifully landscaped gardens in your neighborhood? Have you ever gotten a close look to see why it looks so great or perhaps knocked at the door to learn their elusive gardening secrets? Chances are slim. Sorry, but there is no magic formula,in fact the secret lies in the mulch. I know, how could something so simple create such an amazing looking yard? Simple. Mulch delivers the right conditions for plants and flowers to thrive, expells the enemy and adds a decorative touch!

The nemesis in this case are the dreadful weeds that consume our garden sanctuary. They are downright ugly, bulldoze their way through our precious plants and devour all the important nutrients. Pulling them out is backbreaking and most of us prefer not to douse our lawns or gardens with harmful chemicals. Laying a good foundation of mulch will save you time, prevent back injuries and stop those darn things from sprouting in the first place. The reason mulch staves off unwanted weeds is because it blocks the sun from penetrating the soil and germinating the weed seeds. Also, too much sunlight can damage the plants you do want, adding stress and encouraging ill health.

Another added benefit that mulching can offer is it's amazing ability to retain the correct amount of water. This means less water waste which is good for the planet and less time spent watering. Mulch prevents evaporation and trickles a constance source of humidity providing the ideal environment for your plants and flowers to flourish.

Mulching also keeps your plants safe from unwanted bacteria and disease that may be lurking deep in the soil. Often when we leave our garden exposed, the soil can accidentally get tossed upwards while weeding, spreading bad organismes to the leaves and other parts of the plants. This can make your plants sick and unsightly looking.

So if your garden or yard is lacking prosperous plants and is overrun by weeds, head to your local nursery and pick up some much needed mulch. There are many types to choose from depending on your specific needs, but one thing they all have in common is the ability to transform any run-of-the-mill yard into a garden paradise.
