How to Go for Winter Landscaping

When you are looking at landscaping in colder climates there are many things that you need to look at in order to have a look that you will enjoy. First you need to decide what kind of look you want.

Do you want the evergreen look so that there is the clash of the white and green during the winter and a darker shade in your array during the warmer seasons?

Do you prefer the look of white on white with a few sprinklings of berries during the winter, with a whiter touch during the spring and summer? Do you want to see snow set against red, maroon, dark green, light green and white, with a slight variance in the colors come summer? Do you prefer the full winter look with ice and snow on the limbs of sleeping trees, and resting on a rock landscape?

The trick with winter landscaping is the same as with summer landscaping, figuring out what will look good during the rest of the year. Some people prefer a rock and stone landscape that takes on an eerie glow during the winter nights, with nothing but shimmering light during the day and turning into a well manicured stone garden with rock hedges during the summer.

If you would like a livelier look year around then perhaps you should think about planting something. There are the most obvious and common evergreens. There is the sleeping willow, which adds a relaxed look year around. You can plant perennial grasses, such as plum grass, that will grow between 6 and 12 feet tall and stick around for all twelve months. There is China Holly, which is about 8 feet tall by 8 feet wide, it thrives year round and is drought tolerant. If you prefer a little more color you can go with the Red Osier Dogwood, which has white blooms that flower in May and bark that ranges from burgundy to red.

No matter what style you prefer there is a way to landscape that will match you perfectly. There are a multitude of trees and plants in just about every shape and color that will continue to live throughout the winter. Remember though that when you are looking at vegetation, it must be tall enough to still receive sunlight even when the ground is covered in snow.
