How Plants Kill: The Venus Flytrap

The Venus Flytrap is a flesh eating plant. It digests it's prey alive.

Intro

The Venus Flytrap (VFT) is one of the many carnivorous plants in this world. It's called carnivorous because it catches and eats insects. It is native to North America in boggy and swampy places.

The Catch

The trap of a VFT is shaped like two lobes joined on the bottom like a hinge with a row of sturdy hairs over hanging the top opening. Between the lobes are small trigger hairs which when bent make the trap close up. Among the trigger hairs is sweet nectar which attracts bugs. Bugs accidentally bend the trigger hairs and in less than second they are caught between the two lobes with only the escape route sealed now by interwoven hairs.

Dinner Time

Within about a day or two of the catch, the plant will secrete acidic digestive juices inside the trap. The bug is digested alive and the plant absorbs the nutrients. A week or so later the trap reopens for business.
