Don't just plant trees, plant native trees. They will adapt more easily to their surroundings than exotic or foreign trees, they will more readily withstand the local climate and soil conditions and and they are much better for the environment.
Choose a tree that is a good fit for where you want to place it. Take into consideration aspects such as the amount of shade cast by the tree, height and reach of branches, color of leaves and bark, stretch of roots.
There are many advantages to planting trees such as:
- Oroviding a natural habitat for birds, insects, small animals and other wildlife. Native trees are especially good for this.
- Providing shade from sun and shelter from wind.
- Trees can enhance the appearance and value of your property as long as you don't plant too close to your house and choose the right type of tree.
- As with most plants, trees process carbon dioxide and release oxygen, thereby cleaning the air we breathe. You can offset your carbon footprint every year by planting trees.
- Some trees bare edible fruit such as apples and pears.
- Providing a healthy environment for children to play in.
