Flower Bulbs That Spread for a Colorful Lawn

Many people plant flower bulbs in neat garden plots and around the bases of trees or bushes. This gives a formal, neat appearance to your yard. Others like to make a more natural look by planting flower bulbs right in their lawn. Before the first lawn mowing of the season, you will have a bright and colorful lawn filled with flowers.

Flower Bulb for the Lawn - Daffodil

All of the daffodil and narcissus flower bulb varieties are great for spreading in your lawn. Pick early flowering varieties so you can mow your lawn when needed. Daffodils have long leaves and beautiful cup and saucer flowers on strong stalks. They come in yellows, white, peach, and pink varieties.

Flower Bulb for the Lawn - Grape Hyacinth

Muscari, or the grape hyacinth, is a low growing flower bulb with spiky green leaves and small, cone shaped flower clusters on stalks. The flowers are a bright blue color and are quite striking on your lawn and gardens. This flower bulb variety spreads rapidly and forms tight clumps. Clumps can be lifted and separated or left to spread naturally.

Flower Bulb for the Lawn - Crocus

Crocus is a very popular flower bulb that blooms in the early spring. There are both regular and dwarf varieties, but they are all low growing. These flower bulbs have spiky, grass like leaves and cup shapes flowers in yellow, white, and purple. Crocus thrive in both full sun and partial shade.

Flower Bulb for the Lawn - Galanthus or Snowdrop

Snowdrops are one of the earliest blooming flower bulbs, often poking their sweet white heads out of late winter or early spring snow. They spread rapidly and will cover your lawn with a blanket of dark green leaves and small white flowers.

Flower Bulb for the Lawn - Anemone

Anemones come in a wide variety of colors and flower styles. They can grow anywhere from five inches to a foot tall with low bushy leaves and colorful flowers on short stalks. For your colorful lawn, it is wise to choose an anemone flower bulb variety that blooms in early spring. That way, the flowers will be spent by the time you have to mow the grass. Anemones spread readily and will form carpets of flowers.

Planting flower bulbs in your lawn will give you a springtime burst of color that is natural and beautiful. By the time the flowers die off, your lawn will be ready for its first mowing. By picking flower bulbs that spread naturally and need no digging or separating, you will have a colorful lawn every spring.
