Empty Nest

A nest in my willow tree has been hidden from view until now.

I've been taking pictures of the willow tree in my front garden all through the changes in the seasons, yet yesterday was the first time I noticed that there was an empty nest wrapped up within its tangled branches.

I do remember seeing a little brown bird that hopped about on top of the tree when it was in leaf and the weather was warm last year. The bird would disappear into the centre of the tree, and I wondered whether there was a nest in there.

Without the foliage I was able to get a real close-up of the inside of the nest….

And even a birds-eye view of what the chicks would have seen when they looked up…..

Except, of course, that they would have been looking up through a green canopy, and this would have filtered the light.

I wonder if they'll come back again this year.

Isn't it amazing how they can hide them from us! I am always surprised when the leaves fall and I see how close to me they were living.

This is a great shot.

Thanks Darlene. There were a couple of other pictures which were left out and which relate to the third and fourth paragraphs. I'm hoping that they'll be added soon.

That is so neat, and the roots are even more interesting.I have never seen roots like that on a willow before and we have willows here in plenty. Our willow trunks are smooth with the roots in the ground. It is certainly different.

Great little story and pictures. My wife is doing something similar with a tree, photographing it in the different seasons. I don't think we'll discover a hidden nest, though. It's like finding a secret treasure. I hope the birds return, Dee.

Dee, I love your new series of Spring photos. As I said before, you should really take up photography, you've got a good idea for what looks good.

Dee, I had to come back and tell you what my friend found in a hollowed out tree - a cat and kittens. It is quite high up too.
