When Children Go to Preschool

Anxious parents find help with friendly reminders from a pre-school teacher.

I've seen it many times almost daily being a kindergarten teacher and mother of 4 boys what a special moment it is for parents when children go to pre-school. Like the first cutting of an apron string it can sometimes be a heart wrenching, tear jerking episode in a parent's life but if handled calmly and wisely, it can turn out to be a precious memorable and even joyful one.

The following are some friendly reminders to parents whose children go to pre-school.

A Good Pre-School

Chances are there are millions to choose from with all different kinds of school systems advertised -Montessori, Reggio Emilia, etc., the choices are many and so varied that parents can often be confused choosing which is the best one. Try spending a morning or two in one just before you decide. Many pre-schools allow parents to visit before they sign in.

It is not the system you are after though, when you visit, it is best to observe the interactions teachers have with the children. Warm, friendly, caring atmosphere and genuine relationships among children and staff regardless of the system they follow should be a priority in your list of choices.

    Don't Linger

After your child has been dropped off especially if the child is upset, don't stand around.

Easy to say but hard to do it's true. Nine times out of ten in my long history of teaching preschoolers, a pre-schooler (even the youngest babies) normally stop crying soon after the parent is out of sight. Prolonging your stay only lengthens the child's separation anxiety.

In good pre-school centers the staff always strive to make the children feel safe and secure.

      Forget The Designer Togs

Good pre-school centers provide flour play, clay; play dough, paint, and water play for children daily. The children learn from these activities and love to explore the different textures and materials at this stage. Sensory experiences are a priority for this age group. Make sure the child is dressed in a way that allows messy play.

Do Not Bring The Child to Pre-School If He/She Is Not Well

This may sound silly but some children are dropped off by many a sheepish parent who says, “ He had a fever last night, but seemed all right this morning.” More often than not, teachers have to call the parents in the middle of the day and ask them to fetch their child. Although teachers have first aid certificates (a requirement in New Zealand) they are not doctors. Children are more susceptible to diseases especially in the pre-school stage.

Teachers Know Who is the Boss

Good teachers know parents can never be replaced. Teachers welcome parent's support and inputs help educate the child no matter what age.

            Fetch Your Child On Time

Young children who have spent a day away from their parents often get tired at the end of the day. I've seen many a child's anxiety build up after seeing parent after parent take another of his playmates home leaving him behind.

Don't Feel Offended If Your Child Exhibits No Separation Anxiety

On the other end of a heart-wrenching, tear-jerking episode of separation where the teacher has to literally peel a toddler off a parent who is about to leave, is a calm, collected child who just saunters off to play with hardly a backward look. Oftentimes, parents will wonder if their child cares and leave feeling as guilty as if the child were left screaming his lungs out. Don't fret, these children are the most secure ones who are confident in their parent's love and attention and are mature enough to realize that they will get that same attention when they go home.

Don't Be Afraid To Spend The Child If He/She Is Settled

As soon as your child is settled don't hesitate to stay and spend the day with your child in school. Oftentimes a teacher will encourage your visits. Children also feel more secure when they observe their parents being friendly with the teachers.

                  Parent Support is Always Welcome

Storytelling, puppetry, cooking, playing an instrument, and going on field trips parent help is always welcome. Oftentimes, teachers are in need of someone who might be able to demonstrate some craft or dish in front of the children. Ask your school what they might need. Who knows you might be able to share your latest hobby with some preschoolers!

                    There's No Place Like Home

No matter how much fun a child can have in school, there is nothing like home to a child. This is the place a child can feel safe in the warmth and love of their families.
