What to Expect of a Two-Year-Old Child

Are there really the terrible twos? What a parent can expect emotionally from their two-year-old.

Good golly! Yes! If any one ever tries to tell you that there is no such thing as the terrible twos, then they are taking their life into their own hands. This person doesn't have children, or it has been a long time since they have had a small one. It may be that they have worked and someone else cared for the child during this developmental stage. Two year olds can be hard to live with and for good reason. This time in their life is a time of great change.

Developmental Stages of a Two-Year-Old

You may not see the changes that a child of this age experiences, but you definitely will feel the changes. These changes become pretty obvious when your sweet baby says no and throws his/her toys. At this stage of development the most frequent word that you will hear is no. You will wonder what happened to that sweet baby. At this age they are very self centered and possessive. They do not want to share toys. You have heard the term mine, mine, mine, well this is how a two year old child feels, and will let you know it is his, his, his.

This is also the age where they want to do everything themselves and will tell you “I can do it”. Look for the child to learn many new words at this time of their life. The two year olds' vocabulary increases at this stage but he becomes upset easily when wants to express specific thoughts and doesn't quite have the words yet. Temper tantrums are usually seen at this age and is part of the growing process. One of the scariest things for a two year old child is their fear of monsters. No, they are not just telling you this because they don't want to go to bed. They have a real fear of monsters.

What is Normal For a Two-Year-Old

All of what may get on your last nerve is normal for a two year old child. You are probably saying that temper tantrums are not normal. For the two year old child it is normal and the way they try to exert their independence. This is the period in your baby's life that they change from a baby to a child. It is a big change for both the parent and the child. The child at this stage learns a lot of new words and starts putting them together for short sentences of two or three words. None of the behaviors that are listed are abnormal and believe it or not they do grow out of this stage.
