They Sleep Soundly

Children and how they change who we are.

I turn off the TV, walk into the kitchen and pour a glass of water. As I walk toward the stairs I pick up the trash in the hallway. I turn off the lights downstairs and head toward the stairs. I take my glass of water into the bedroom and sit it down not moving toward the bed at this time.

As I look at the bed their dad lays sleeping, the TV is on and the dog is waiting to get into the bed. I lift the dog onto the bed and walk out of the room again.

I slowly and quietly walk into my oldest daughters room. Remembering that just tonight she had told me she has “learned to sleep with her lights off”. A huge step as she goes through the growing up process.

She is going to be six soon, she is beautiful and the sweetest little heart. I remember the evening, sure her and her sister had some arguments but they worked it out. I sit slowly on the edge of her bed as I run my fingers through her hair. She moves slightly but not to much.

She has always sleep very sound, even as a baby she sleep through almost anything. I think back to the time we took her to a fair and she was in my arms and the parade was featuring the Ohio State band and she sleep through the whole thing. It hits me know how much I love this little girl.

Now I go and walk across the hall to her younger sisters room. Not having going to sleep to long before me coming upstairs she is now sound asleep. Not to long ago she had come down the stairs to give me “big loves and kisses” she had said. I think how proud I am of this little girl as well and how much I love her. Not as sound of a sleeper as her sister and has never been.

I sit quietly on the edge of her bed also to run my fingers through her hair. She opens her eyes and looks at me, she then turned over and closed them again. I think back to the night a while back that I had come into her room to kiss her goodnight and tell her I loved her, as I said it she opened her eyes and said I love you too and went right back to sleep. I think how much this girl means to me as well.

So as I walk back towards my own room I thank God for giving me such a gift. He has entrusted me with these two girls to love and care for them. I pray daily for the strengths, caring and love to do just that. So as they sleep soundly I go to my bed to gain the strength to give it my all tomorrow.
