The Daddy He Didn't Have to Be

There is a country song by Brad Paisley about a father hoping to be half the dad that his didn't have to be. Here is a story of a real Daddy, who didn't have to be.

She was born on the 4th of July, three weeks early.  The doctors had told Sarah that her baby girl was going to have difficulties and had a very slim chance of surviving past one year.  Doctors told Sarah she should consider terminating her pregnancy.  After all, this baby was going to be very sick and would need a kidney transplant in order to live.  They told Sarah that the baby would need to be at least 20 pounds in order to receive a new kidney and that she would probably never make it to that weight.  Why would a single mother want to go through this alone?  But Sarah didn't care what they said; she had faith and knew her baby was going to make it.  Besides, she wasn't truly alone, she had her friends and family.  The morning of that hot July 4th, Lyndsey was born.  She had Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome, a very rare disease in the United States.

Lyndsey spent most of her time in and out of the hospital.  At 9 months old, doctors removed both her kidneys and she was put on peritoneal dialysis.   After 5 months in the hospital, Lyndsey came home with her mom and waited for the call saying there was a kidney for her.   On January 4 the call came in.  Lyndsey received a kidney and after several long weeks; she came home.  Life would never be the same for this miracle baby and her single mother, things were definitely tough.  Until he came into their lives.

He moved into the condo upstairs in May.  He was a plumber with long hair, definitely not Sarah's type.  Lyndsey was 3 years old now and doing great but still required Sarah to stay home with her.  Sarah hadn't even thought of dating someone since she had Lyndsey, who had the time?  But it sure was nice to meet someone she could talk to without the mention of Barney or Elmo.  They would run into each other in the parking lot or by the mailbox and soon Nick was introduced to Lyndsey.  It was love at first sight, for both of them.  Sarah wondered what that meant, Lyndsey adored Nick and he seemed to be putty in her hands.  December found them talking even more and by January they were having date nights; at home of course as Sarah still didn't want to leave Lyndsey with a sitter.

Nick knew everything about what Sarah and Lyndsey had gone through.  He knew everything they had ahead of them and that life might not be easy for these two strong women, but he fell in love with them anyway.  In February he came downstairs with flowers and a haircut, that was when Sarah knew; he is the one.  They were engaged and married by June.  Sarah had the DJ play Brad Paisley's song as it was so perfect for their situation.  He was now a Daddy... when he didn't have to be.
