Instilling patriotism in children does not happen by accident. To
help your family develop an appreciation for country requires time
and effort. Below are 10 suggestions for getting started:
- Learn all the verses of the patriotic hymns in the hymn book.
- Read biographies and autobiographies of famous patriots. Discuss their contributions to their country, what qualities they displayed.
- Consider taking family vacations to historical sites. Do your homework before arriving and learn what event took place there and why it was important.
- Teach children to take care of their belongings. This translates in to caring for the environment which inspires greater pride in country.
- As a family, learn about the candidates and issues before election time. If possible, take your children with you when you vote.
- Display a flag throughout the year, not just on holidays.
- Volunteer in the community, including your children when appropriate. Participate as a family in church-sponsored service days.
- Know the names of your congress persons and senators and write to them about issues. Encourage your children to do the same.
- Hold a family home evening with a patriotic them. Ideas include acting our famous scenes in history, serving red/white/blue refreshments, and singing patriotic hymns.
- Has a member of your family or a friend served in the armed forces? Have him or her share experiences with the family and feelings about serving his/her country.
