For first time mothers the commercial world has a great assortment of ideas that YOUR baby will need. However, are those items truly necessary? I took one of my best friends with me to create my baby registry and boy did I appreciate her help, but she kept making me add things to my list that I truly wondered was something I really needed or not. She is a mother herself, so of course there is no doubt that she knows what she is talking about.
However, after talking to several moms and doing some research online, you start to see that a new born baby really does not need that much. Of course in the first order of business, you will need a car seat for your precious one. Hospitals won't even let you leave unless you have one. But just like everything else in life, every mother is different and will beg to differ what the essentials are that a baby needs. For instance, one friend said a baby does not need that many bibs. Any small towel will do and just make sure you have enough on hand so that while you are doing your laundry, there are still some left.
My other friend said she could not have enough bibs. She said her baby spit up a lot and she went through them like crazy. Other moms tell me not to buy too many new born clothing because they grow out of them fast. Other moms ask me if I've been shopping a lot for a new born? With all the advice swirling around, the only thing I could truly gather is that also every baby is different and the only way I can assess what his needs will be is to wait and around and see after he is born. He may prefer Pampers to Huggies. I've read that some babies are more comfortable in one type of diaper over the other. So when women requests diapers for their showers, it may work for them or may not.
They're are so many things that baby companies have invented to ensure more comfort for mommy and baby, it's dizzying just to try and research all of it. Like for example, how important is the boppy? Don't get me wrong, when I saw my friend using it, I thought it was a great thing to have. However, she put it away after only a few months of using it. Now it just sits and collects dust. Women for centuries didn't need it, do I? There are items that are worth splurging on but I think it's important to pick and choose. Gift cards are even a great idea, you may need it for extra diapers and formulas. It all falls on what each individual mother chooses. You're not a bad mom if you choose to forgo on certain items. As long as you have the necessary things that will ensure your baby's health, I'm pretty sure it will be okay.
