Mistakes Parents Often Make

Here are the most common mistakes parents make while handling their children.

Giving up to demands of children -

Bonding with children is an important aspect. To enhance bonding, parents try to give their best for them. They do not want to upset their children. They shower their children with gifts. This is more common amongst working parents. Working parents feel the guilt of not spending much time with their kids and easily succumb to their unreasonable demands so as to compensate for the time not spared with them. But by doing so, they do more harm than good. Such children turn self-centered and selfish. Parents realize their mistake when the demands made do not fit their budget and they are unable to fulfill them.

It is important to say "no" and be firm.

Children should learn the value of money. Let them know that money is a product of struggle and hard work.

Giving decisive powers -

Though opinion of children should be asked and respected, it should not cross a limit. If you disagree with their particular choice or opinion, then say it is not good for them. Do not try to reason or enter into a debate.

Abusing or criticizing -

Some parents often criticize their children.

Never tease children. Never call them with names such as "ugly", "stupid", "lazy".

Criticism is more dangerous when done in front of others. It makes child feel ridiculed and hence affects his or her confidence.

It is important to point out the bad behaviour in children. But this behaviour should be reprimanded, not children.

Children should be allowed to grow and learn through mistakes.

Expectations -

Most parents are not satisfied with their children's accomplishments.

It is important for parents to keep their egoistic expectations aside. These expectations are destructive not only to the parents but their kids as well.

Children should be encouraged to succeed. But if encouragement turns to pressure, they become anxious and start under-performing. It may also lower their confidence.

Parents must not burden children with unrealistic aspirations. Children should have their own dreams and parents should help fulfill them.

Defending when reprimanded -

It is also very commonly seen that parents defend their children who have been reprimanded. When reprimanded, their ego is hurt. Instead of correcting their children, they are angered and challenge the person who has pointed their mistake.

Parental fights -

Disagreements are common in marriage. But children should not be made spectators to parental quarrels and arguments. They are exposed to your aggressive behaviour. Quarreling in front of children lowers self-esteem and they feel insecure.

Mistakes are bound to happen in life. But if you learn from mistakes, it will help you be a better person.
