Is it Right to Put Your Special Child in a Special School?

Special children should go to a regular school where they can play and interact socially with normal children.

Parents of special children are often advised to put their special children in special schools. Special schools for different cases abound these days. And there are also special therapists for children who have special cases.

Children are great imitators. They tend to follow whatever they see around them and imitate what people around them say and do. That is because they lack the maturity to do what they are supposed to do and what dictates their actions are the things that they collect around them.

When children get together as in playing and studying at school, they look at each other and imitate each other. Normal children do have better and faster perceptions than special children. But still they are all children who learn by listening to the teacher and imitating her.

I had been teaching for more than twenty years. I teach children who are as young as two years old.

Our school is not a special school and yet there are parents who want us to accept their special children. Most of the parents of these special children have come from therapists who had given them some sessions. They often complain that the children haven't improved at all and with the amount of money they had been paying for every session, it wasn't worth the price.

Usually, we tell the parents to try, but once there children are with us for a few days the children would begin to behave and join the different activities of the normal children. We have observed that the children didn't mind these special children and they see them as normal like themselves. It was such a wonderful experience having these special children interacting with the normal ones without any problems. Although we don't allow them to participate in all the activities, they are there in the classroom like the normal children. The important thing is that all of them have shown remarkable changes especially in interacting with the other children.

They exhibit behavioral changes that they usually maintain throughout. We have handled hyperactive children, mongoloid children, dyslexic children and children with retarded growth and development. We treat them as we treat the normal children and we observe that they could behave and act normally too when given the proper training.

With these experiences, we often advise parents to treat their special children normally and not give them too much special treatment and attention so that the children could grow normally and have a mind of their own. What these children need are normal children to play and work with. If they interact with children like them, they would not see the difference.

While the children are young let them go to a regular school who accept children with special cases. Children will have better chances to grow and develop positively with the other children socializing with them. A child is not advisable to be put in a room with the teacher alone as it will only make the child unable to communicate with other children. It is better if the child will play and socialize with kids like him in order to develop self-confidence and his special skills.
