We were once upon a time in their shoes as well. We know how some "tricks" work and others don't, not because it was a bad way of studying the subject, but simply because we could not understand it when the topic was presented in that way.
As parents, we should observe what works for our child (mind you, each child learns in a different manner too!).
Some children learn most when they do a last minute crap just before the exams. These children can perform under pressure.
Others, simply have to hit the books every day when they come back from school. By the time the exams are nearer, the opposite happens, they will study less. They have to be relaxed, otherwise, they will forget all they have studied when the pressure increases.
Some children can learn more in a study group, whilst others just need to sit by themselves.
Parents, when you tell your child to go to his room to study, some will, others will want you to be by their side - not studying with them, but reading there (or doing something) so that you are within reach when they need your help for homework.
Parents, you have to know your child and their study style AND their homework, then you can discuss the problem at the dinner table or in front of the television. This also gives you a chance to relate to them. Kids are always complaining that they cannot talk to their parents! So if you are there with them, you will be in sync with their thoughts.
Happy studying.
