Winding a baby after feeding is one of the best things you can do to prevent trapped wind and thus pain and discomfort later on in the day. |
Basic steps to take: - After feeding your baby, sit them upright on your thigh with their legs dangling over yours and they are facing in towards you.
- Using your hand, gently make clockwise circular movements on their back at the top between the shoulder blades.
- Do not rub fast or hard, but rather in a smooth consistent manner.
- Some slight patting may also help.
- If after a few minutes there is no burp, gently lay baby down and then raise them - this should generate the burp.
Tips: - Always have muslin to hand for those wet burps.
- If baby has a bluish tinge to the area below the nose, then they still have some wind to come up.
- If this still doesn't help then you can hold them over your forearm, so that they are facing down and gently swing them. The pressure on their stomach eases the windy pain they feel.
