My daughter is five years old, I’m sorry she is five and a half, heaven forbid you forget the half. If you make that mistake she will remind you with all the disgust in her voice that she can muster, which I assure you is a lot. This little girl who is not old enough to ride a bike without training wheels could be an award winning actress. She could go out there and win any Oscar or Emmy award there it; not a Tony though as the poor child can’t carry a tune in a bucket with the lid nailed shut.
This on demand crying is not atypical for little girls, I am almost positive that the term “drama queen” was penned for little girls. A young girl can take the most innocuous even as a personal affront and turn on water works that no actress today can match. My son simply looks at her crooked and the cries start to the point that you wonder if there is bodily injury involved.
What hurts her feelings can be anything from a word, to someone looking at her the wrong way. She is not picky; she will turn the water works on for anyone who will be an attentive audience. Even her kindergarten teacher is aware of her predisposition for the dramatic and has learned to ignore then at times. My daughter can get a small paper cut that doesn’t even shed blood and you wonder if you should come running with the phone in hand to call 9-1-1 for a severed limb.
As a mentioned my husband and I are not alone with our drama queen we also have two little boys in the house. Our three year old has picked up this dramatic cry from our daughter, but I am almost sure that he is better at it. While she has the wails down pat, he is quicker to turn on the waterworks that should be associated; whereas my daughter only turns them on if her initial cries are not heeded by the nearest adult.
We have learned to block out this noise, as has my cousin who also has two little girls right around the same age. Many who see us ignore these cries are at first shocked if they don’t have a young girl of their own in their family. Those who do though, know the tears of drama all to well and have the same opinion of their daughter’s that I do. I think that girls have an innate ability to act and that it is amazing how quickly they can change from the tears one second to laughing the next
If my moods changed that quickly my doctor would want to put me on some heavy duty medication.
